More specifically, it was the track ‘Hoedown,’ adapted from Aaron Copeland’s ‘Rodeo’ with its boundless energy and strangely patriotic optimism that struck a chord with every listener. It was probably this song above all which helped E.L.P to crossover from a mainly ‘college’ audience to a much more mainstream one. The success of ‘Trilogy’ was a consolidated with the release of ‘Brain Salad Surgery,’ the album which gave us two of the most fondly remembered E.L.P tracks: Greg Lake’s affecting acoustic ballad, ‘Still You Turn Me On and ‘Karn Evil 9 a song which, for good or bad, is now E.L.P.’s theme tune – associated with them now for nearly thirty years it still evokes the awesome majesty of an E.L.P gig effortlessly. It speaks volumes of the groups credibility at this point that they were able to approach the composer Alberto Ginastera directly to adapt his Piano Concerto No.1 for the album when the publishers had said no Ginastera approved immediately and the track ‘Tocatta’ was born. With the release of the triple live album ‘Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends…Ladies and Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake & Palmer’ (an album whose name matched its content in both length and attitude,) E.L.P reached their nadir. Following releases where, due to inter-group squabbles, record company maneuvering and, perhaps above all, the pressure of being the most popular band on the planet, led to a general decline in the quality of their recorded work. ‘Works’ marked the end of collaborative writing in favour of one side for each band member’s solo compositions. The album was seen, rightly, as self-indulgent and of considerably less ‘soul’ than previous releases. 1979’s love Beach’ the band’s next album proper was a mere run through the motions for the sake of contractual obligation. As Lake himself commented, “After Love Beach ELP wasn’t so much a band that was fighting, it was more a band that had had enough. It was a band that wanted to stop, and couldn’t stop due to commitments that had been made. After the Works tour we wanted some time apart from each other creatively, and we weren’t allowed to do that. Had we had that break, I am sure we would have gotten back together much sooner than we did. ” Throughout these difficult times however, some things remained constant: The undisputable genius of the three band members, the devotion of its audience and the power and splendor of the music. Since their initial split in December 1979, the band have reformed and split several times. Each time they toured, and each time the old magic was recreated effortlessly. The material included on this disk is a testament to this magic.
